Quick answer

Tirzepatide in Korea is available as Mounjaro, a once-weekly injection prescribed after an in-person consultation. Foreigners, including short-term visitors, can be assessed with a passport. At VEI Clinic in Apgujeong, Gangnam, Dr. HyunSung Park reviews your health in English and helps plan cold storage and a doctor's letter if you travel with pens.

Is tirzepatide available in Korea?

Yes. Tirzepatide in Korea is sold under the brand name Mounjaro and became available in 2025. It is a prescription-only medicine that activates both GIP and GLP-1 hormone receptors to reduce appetite, slow stomach emptying and improve blood sugar control. You may know it as Zepbound if you have lived in the United States, where tirzepatide is also marketed under that name for weight management.

Because tirzepatide is prescription-only, it cannot legally be bought over the counter or online without a doctor's assessment. At VEI Clinic, Dr. HyunSung Park, a board-certified internal medicine specialist U.S.-educated as a graduate of the State University of New York, sees patients 1:1 in English and prescribes only when treatment is appropriate.

How prescriptions work for foreigners

You do not need Korean national health insurance or an alien registration card to be seen. Short-term visitors can register with a passport; residents can use their residence card. Weight-loss use of tirzepatide is generally self-pay, so insurance status mostly affects other parts of care.

During the consultation, Dr. Park reviews your weight history, medical conditions, current medicines and any previous use of semaglutide or tirzepatide. If you are already on treatment abroad, bring your prescription, pen box or a photo of the label, and recent lab results. This helps us continue at a safe dose rather than restarting from the beginning unnecessarily.

Tirzepatide starts at 2.5 mg weekly for four weeks, then usually rises in 2.5 mg steps toward a maintenance dose. For visitors, we plan how many weeks of supply make sense and how dose changes will be handled once you leave Korea.

Before your first dose, we usually check basic blood tests such as fasting glucose, HbA1c, lipids, and liver and kidney function, plus a body composition test. If you have recent results from home, bring them; they may reduce what needs repeating. We also teach you how to use the pen, where to inject and how to rotate injection sites, so you can continue confidently on your own.

Traveling with tirzepatide pens

Tirzepatide pens are temperature-sensitive, so traveling with them takes some preparation. Following the manufacturer's storage guidance protects the medicine you have paid for.

  • Keep unused pens refrigerated at 2–8°C and never freeze them; a frozen pen should not be used
  • Pens can usually be kept unrefrigerated at room temperature (up to 30°C) for a limited period stated on the label, so check your product leaflet
  • Use an insulated travel case with cool packs, and do not let pens touch ice packs directly
  • Carry pens in your hand luggage, never in checked bags where they may freeze
  • Ask us for a doctor's letter in English that names the medicine, dose and reason for use
  • Keep the original packaging and pharmacy label, and check your destination country's import rules

Who tirzepatide suits, and who should not use it

Tirzepatide for weight management is generally considered for adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes or fatty liver. It is also approved for type 2 diabetes.

It should not be used by people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or by anyone with a previous serious allergy to tirzepatide. A history of pancreatitis or gallbladder disease needs careful review. Oral contraceptives may be less reliable after starting and after each dose increase, so a backup method is advised during those weeks.

Limits and red flags

Tirzepatide is most effective alongside changes in eating, activity and sleep, and weight regain is common after stopping. If you are only in Korea briefly, think about who will supervise your treatment at home.

Dose increases also need planning. If you will be away from Korea when your next step is due, we discuss whether to stay on your current dose until you can be reviewed, rather than increasing without supervision. Skipping several weeks can mean restarting at a lower dose, so plan supply around any long trips.

Common side effects are nausea, diarrhea, constipation and reduced appetite. Call 119 or go to an emergency room if you have severe abdominal pain that spreads to your back, vomiting that stops you keeping fluids down, signs of dehydration, or facial swelling and breathing difficulty.

FAQ

Common questions

Can a tourist get tirzepatide in Korea?

Yes, after an in-person consultation where a doctor confirms it is appropriate. You will need your passport to register. Because the dose is increased gradually, we discuss how treatment will continue after you leave Korea.

Is Mounjaro in Korea the same as Zepbound?

Both contain tirzepatide. Zepbound is the brand used for weight management in some countries, such as the United States, while Korea uses the Mounjaro brand. Pen designs and available strengths can differ by country.

Can I continue the dose I was on in my home country?

Often, yes, if you bring proof of your current dose and have been using it recently. If you have missed several weeks, a lower restart dose may be safer. Dr. Park decides this after reviewing your history.

Do I need a letter to fly with tirzepatide pens?

Airlines and security often accept injectable medicines in hand luggage, but a doctor's letter and original packaging make the process smoother. Some countries have stricter import rules, so check requirements for your destination.

What if my pen gets warm during travel?

Pens can usually tolerate room temperature for a limited time, but heat above the label limit or freezing can damage the medicine. If you are unsure whether a pen is still usable, contact us or a pharmacist before injecting it.

Can I get follow-up care remotely after I leave?

Korean rules on remote prescribing are limited, so we cannot promise ongoing prescriptions from abroad. We can provide a written summary of your treatment and dose so your home doctor can continue your care.

This page is general information reviewed by a physician and is not a substitute for a personal consultation. Treatment suitability, benefits and risks differ for each person and are discussed with you before any care. In an emergency in Korea, call 119.
