Finding an English speaking doctor in Seoul

Seoul has excellent medicine, but finding an English speaking doctor in Seoul who can hold a full, unhurried conversation is harder than it should be. Many clinics rely on a coordinator to translate, which works for simple visits but can lose detail when you are describing a symptom that has been building for weeks or asking about a medication you take at home.

At VEI Clinic (베이의원) in Apgujeong, the consultation itself is in English. Dr. HyunSung Park is a board-certified internal medicine specialist in Korea with a subspecialty in gastroenterology. He graduated from the State University of New York, is ECFMG certified, and was formerly a clinical professor at Dongguk University Ilsan Hospital. He has been treating patients in Korea since 2010.

That combination matters in practice: you get a specialist who understands how medicine is practiced in Korea and can explain it in terms that make sense if you grew up with a different system.

What a 1:1 English consultation actually looks like

There is no three-way conversation. You sit with the doctor, explain what is going on, and he asks follow-up questions in English. If you bring a list of medications, previous test results or a letter from your doctor at home, he reads them with you rather than passing them to someone else to summarize.

Before you leave, you should know what he thinks is happening, what tests (if any) are worth doing, what the treatment options are and what to watch for. If a prescription is needed, he explains what it is for and how to take it, so the pharmacy visit afterward is straightforward even if the pharmacist's English is limited.

Follow-up works the same way. If tests are ordered, you come back, or arrange another way to hear the results, and go through them with the same doctor. Over time that continuity matters: a doctor who already knows your blood pressure history, your usual medicines and how you described a problem last spring can spot changes that a new doctor at each visit would miss.

  • Time to describe symptoms in your own words
  • Plain-English explanation of findings and test results
  • Clear discussion of costs before any treatment, including whether national insurance applies
  • Written instructions you can keep

What we treat

VEI Clinic is a doctor's office (의원), not a hospital, so the focus is primary care, internal medicine and preventive health. Typical reasons people come in include:

  • Colds, flu, fever, cough and other respiratory infections
  • Urinary tract infections, allergies and shingles
  • Stomach pain, reflux (GERD) and other digestive problems, with abdominal ultrasound when useful
  • Blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol and thyroid care, including thyroid ultrasound
  • Blood tests, physicals, health checkups and vaccinations, including flu and hepatitis B
  • Medical weight loss, IV therapy and functional or longevity-focused consultations

Who this suits, and when another doctor is better

A 1:1 English consultation suits expats who want a regular doctor they can talk to, business travelers who need to be seen quickly, and anyone who has felt rushed or misunderstood elsewhere. It is also useful when you need medical paperwork explained, or want a second opinion on results from another clinic.

Some needs belong elsewhere. We do not perform endoscopy, surgery, dentistry or plastic surgery, and we are not an emergency department. When a problem needs a hospital or a different specialist, we can refer you to a hospital and explain what to expect there.

If you are not sure whether your problem is something we handle, send a short WhatsApp message describing it. We would rather tell you upfront that a hospital department is a better fit than have you make a wasted trip across Seoul.

When not to wait for a clinic appointment

Call 119 (Korea's emergency number, with interpretation available) or go straight to a hospital emergency room if you have chest pain or pressure, trouble breathing, sudden weakness or numbness on one side, confusion, a severe headache unlike any before, fainting, heavy bleeding, a serious injury, or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the lips or throat. A clinic visit is the wrong place to start in those situations.

FAQ

Common questions

How do I find an English speaking doctor in Seoul quickly?

Look for a clinic where the doctor, not only the front desk, speaks English, and confirm it before you book. At VEI Clinic in Apgujeong, every consultation with Dr. HyunSung Park is held 1:1 in English. You can message on WhatsApp to check same-day availability.

Is Dr. Park's medical training from the U.S.?

Dr. Park is a board-certified internal medicine specialist in Korea and a gastroenterology subspecialist. He is U.S.-educated, a graduate of the State University of New York, and holds ECFMG certification. He practices medicine in Korea under a Korean license.

Do the front desk staff also speak English?

Booking can be done in English by WhatsApp message, which many patients find easiest. If you are unsure about anything on arrival, the doctor can explain it directly during your consultation.

Can I use Korean national health insurance?

If you are enrolled in the National Health Insurance Service, bring your residence card (ARC), and insurance applies to covered services. Some services, such as IV therapy and weight-loss treatment, are not covered. We tell you which is which and quote the full price before treatment.

Can I bring medical records from my home country?

Yes, and it helps. English-language records, medication lists and recent lab results let the doctor see your history directly without translation. Paper copies or files on your phone are both fine.

Will my prescription be filled at the clinic?

No. In Korea, clinics write prescriptions and you fill them at a separate pharmacy (약국), usually close by. The doctor explains each medicine in English so you know what you are collecting and how to take it.

This page is general information reviewed by a physician and is not a substitute for a personal consultation. Treatment suitability, benefits and risks differ for each person and are discussed with you before any care. In an emergency in Korea, call 119.
