What a medical tourism Korea wellness trip can include

Medical tourism in Korea is often associated with cosmetic surgery, but a growing number of visitors come for wellness: a thorough health check, a chance to talk at length with a specialist and a plan for weight, energy or long-term health. VEI Clinic offers this as a doctor-led clinic in Apgujeong, Gangnam, with every consultation held in English by Dr. HyunSung Park, a board-certified internal medicine specialist educated in the U.S.

A typical medical tourism Korea wellness itinerary might include a health checkup with blood tests and ultrasound, a review of the results, IV therapy if appropriate, and a medical weight-loss or longevity consultation. We do not offer surgery, plastic surgery or endoscopy; if your plans include those, we can refer you to a hospital.

Getting the order and timing right

The single most useful planning tip is to put the checkup at the start of your stay. Many lab results take a few days to come back, and the findings may change what else is sensible. A good rough sequence for a one- to two-week trip:

Avoid scheduling an IV drip or a new medicine on the same day as a long-haul arrival. Give yourself at least a night's sleep first, so the doctor is assessing you rather than your jet lag, and so you can tell whether you actually feel unwell or are simply tired from the flight.

  • Early in the trip: consultation and fasting blood tests, plus ultrasound or body composition if planned
  • Middle of the trip: results review in English, and decisions about IV therapy or a weight program
  • Last few days: any final IV session or follow-up, leaving a buffer day before your flight
  • Before leaving: collect copies of results and a summary for your home doctor

IV therapy on a wellness trip: honest expectations

Hydration and vitamin drips such as Myers', vitamin C, glutathione or NAD+ are popular with travelers, especially for jet lag. Rehydration helps when you are genuinely dehydrated, but high-quality evidence that vitamin drips improve energy, immunity or aging in healthy people is limited. Dr. Park will tell you plainly whether a drip makes sense for you, and will not recommend one if your results or medicines make it unsuitable, for example in some kidney or heart conditions.

If you do choose a drip, the doctor checks your history, medicines and relevant results first. Side effects are usually minor, such as bruising or discomfort at the needle site, but allergic reactions and fluid overload can occur in rare cases, which is why a medical review comes first.

Starting a weight program while traveling

Prescription medicines such as Wegovy (semaglutide) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide) are weekly injections that can support significant weight loss alongside diet and activity changes. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, constipation and diarrhea, especially as the dose increases. They are not suitable for everyone, including people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2, and those who are pregnant or planning pregnancy.

Doses are increased gradually over weeks and need monitoring, so a short trip is better used for assessment and a plan than for a full program. If treatment is started, you will need a doctor at home who can continue prescribing and monitoring. Also check the rules for carrying injectable medicines through customs in your home country.

Follow-up after you fly home

After you return, you can message us about practical matters such as copies of results. Ongoing medical care, prescription renewals and monitoring should continue with a doctor where you live, since that doctor can examine you and order tests locally. We provide your results and a summary so the handover is straightforward. If you visit Korea regularly, you can book an in-person review on your next trip.

If you develop severe symptoms while in Korea, such as chest pain, breathing difficulty or severe abdominal pain, call 119. After you go home, use your local emergency services.

FAQ

Common questions

How long should a medical tourism Korea wellness trip be?

Allow at least several days between your first visit and your flight so lab results can come back and be reviewed. A week or more gives room for a follow-up and any IV sessions without rushing.

Can I start Wegovy or Mounjaro on a short trip?

It may be possible after an assessment, but these medicines need gradual dose increases and monitoring over months. We will only consider it if you have a doctor at home who can continue care, and we will explain side effects and suitability first.

Is IV therapy safe right before a long flight?

For most healthy people a simple hydration drip is low-risk, but it is sensible to leave a buffer before flying in case of bruising or feeling unwell. The doctor will advise based on your health and the drip chosen.

Do I need a visa for medical treatment in Korea?

Short wellness visits are often covered by standard tourist entry rules, but requirements depend on your nationality. Check with a Korean embassy or official immigration guidance before booking.

How do I pay as a visitor?

Visitors pay directly at the clinic. We explain what determines the cost of each part of your plan and quote the full price before treatment. Ask for English receipts if you want to claim from insurance.

Can you do stem cell treatment on a wellness trip?

Stem cell programs are consultation-based and regulated in Korea under the Advanced Regenerative Bio Act. Suitability is assessed individually and outcomes cannot be promised. Discuss it in a consultation rather than planning a trip around it.

This page is general information reviewed by a physician and is not a substitute for a personal consultation. Treatment suitability, benefits and risks differ for each person and are discussed with you before any care. In an emergency in Korea, call 119.
