Stem cell facials in Seoul: what is really in the serum
Seoul is full of glow treatments with stem cell names. Before a needle or device goes near your face, it is worth knowing what is in the product and what it can realistically do.

Most stem cell facials in Seoul use exosome or growth factor serums that contain no living stem cells. At VEI Clinic in Apgujeong, Gangnam, Dr. HyunSung Park, an internal medicine specialist and ISSCR member, offers a consultation explaining the evidence, Korean regulations and risks, checks for internal causes of skin changes and points you to proven options.
What a stem cell facial in Seoul usually involves
A stem cell facial in Seoul is usually a serum containing exosomes, plant stem cell extract, stem-cell conditioned media or growth factors, applied to the skin after microneedling, a laser or a peel so that it penetrates more deeply. Despite the name, these serums contain no living human stem cells. They are extracts or fluids from cell cultures, and they cannot turn into new skin cells.
VEI Clinic does not perform stem cell facials or aesthetic skin procedures. We offer a consultation-based program: Dr. HyunSung Park, a board-certified internal medicine specialist and member of the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR), explains what a product you have been offered contains, how it is regulated in Korea, what the evidence shows, and whether there is a medical reason behind the skin changes that bother you.
Evidence, regulation and risks
Small studies suggest that some growth factor and exosome serums may modestly improve hydration or fine texture when combined with procedures, but most are short, small and often funded by manufacturers. There is no good evidence that they produce lasting rejuvenation beyond what the procedure itself or a sound skincare routine achieves.
In Korea, exosome and similar products are generally sold as cosmetics for use on intact skin. Cosmetics are not approved as medicines to be injected or pushed into the skin. Cell therapies themselves are lawful only as MFDS-approved products for their approved indications, or under approved treatment plans at designated regenerative medical institutions under the Advanced Regenerative Bio Act, amended in February 2025. Facial rejuvenation is not an indication on either route.
Applying unapproved products to skin opened by needles has been linked in medical reports to infection, persistent redness and inflamed lumps called granulomas. The ISSCR cautions against paying for unproven stem cell interventions marketed directly to the public. Fat grafting described as stem cell enriched is a surgical procedure that belongs with a plastic surgeon.
Before booking anywhere, ask what the product is called, who makes it, whether it is registered as a cosmetic or a medicine, how it will be applied and who treats complications. Bring the answers, or a photo of the label, to your consultation.
Proven ways to care for aging skin
The measures with the strongest evidence are simple and affordable. A dermatologist can tailor them to your skin type and add procedures where appropriate:
- Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, the single most effective anti-aging step
- Topical retinoids, which have good evidence for fine lines and texture
- Not smoking, limiting alcohol and protecting sleep
- Treating acne, rosacea or pigmentation as specific conditions
- Choosing licensed procedures from a dermatologist, with clear product information
What we can check from the inside
Dull, dry or thinning skin and hair sometimes reflect an internal problem. At VEI Clinic, Dr. Park can arrange blood tests for thyroid function, iron and ferritin, vitamin D, B12, blood sugar and relevant hormones, and review medicines and supplements that affect skin. If a problem is found, treating it often helps skin and energy together.
Skin is also affected by conditions such as diabetes, kidney or liver disease and some medicines, including long-term steroids. Because Dr. Park looks at your general health rather than only your face, the consultation can uncover problems that no serum would address.
The clinic also offers glutathione and vitamin C IV therapy. Evidence that these improve skin tone is limited, and glutathione for skin lightening carries safety cautions, so Dr. Park discusses them only where they make sense and never as a substitute for sun protection. If you need specialist skin care, we can refer you to a dermatologist.
Who this suits, who should not, and red flags
This consultation suits people comparing stem cell or exosome facials, those who reacted badly to a treatment elsewhere, and anyone who suspects a medical cause for skin changes. Facial procedures should be postponed during pregnancy, with active skin infection or cold sores, or with a history of keloid scarring until a specialist has advised.
After any facial injection or procedure, seek urgent help, and call 119 if severe, for:
- Sudden vision changes or severe pain after an injection near the face
- Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing
- Spreading redness, pus, fever or rapidly growing painful lumps
- Skin turning pale, gray or dusky blue near a treated area

Common questions
Does VEI Clinic offer a stem cell facial in Seoul?
No. We offer a consultation about stem cell facials in Seoul, not the procedure. Dr. Park explains what the products contain, the evidence and the risks, and looks for medical causes of skin changes.
Do exosome facials contain stem cells?
No. Exosomes are tiny particles released by cells in culture. Exosome serums contain no living stem cells and cannot create new skin tissue.
Are exosome microneedling treatments approved in Korea?
Exosome products are generally sold as cosmetics for intact skin, not as approved medicines for injection or for skin opened by needles. Ask any provider exactly what is being used and how it is approved.
Will a stem cell facial reverse wrinkles?
There is no good evidence that it will. Sunscreen, topical retinoids, healthy habits and well-chosen dermatology procedures have far stronger evidence.
I had a reaction after a facial elsewhere. Can you help?
Yes. Dr. Park can examine you, treat infection if present and refer you to a dermatologist or hospital if needed. For breathing difficulty or vision changes, call 119 first.
What does a skin consultation cost?
It depends on its length and any blood tests. We explain the full price before anything is done, and national health insurance may or may not apply.
This page is general information reviewed by a physician and is not a substitute for a personal consultation. Treatment suitability, benefits and risks differ for each person and are discussed with you before any care. In an emergency in Korea, call 119.
